Transgender Has Gender Identity
Gender Neutrality to Transgenders:
- Transgender are people who have a gender identity,or gender expression, that differs from their assigned sex.
- “ZE” is often used by transgender people in place of traditional pronouns. In United States gender neutral alternatives of “Ze” and “Hir” have been used for more than a decade.
- The American University lists acceptable alternative pronouns to also include “E”, “Ey” or “Per”.
Oxford University Significant Move
In a significant move, Oxford University had urged students to use gender “Ze” instead of ‘He’ or ‘She’ when addressing the fellow students. The Students union wrote in a leaflet that move was intended to reduce the risk of transgender students being offended. Deliberately using the wrong pronoun for a transgender person is already an offence under Oxford’s behavior code. Last month, Oxford college became one of the first to introduce gender-neutral lavatories marked with a new symbol.
This is a great move by Oxford University, this is going to make a huge difference to the lives of transgenders. We have to wait and see if Indian Universities are going to follow this.
