Logan Movie Review

Movie starts in the year 2029, and all the mutants have died out around the world. The future is not bright and flashy and colourful like previous X-Men movies, but a gritty and violent dystopian future – where Professor Charles Xavier and Wolverine are close to dying. In many ways this is more violent than Deadpool, though without the comedy and wisecrack lines. There is no laughter in this movie – but sheer relentless violence and brutal deaths – exactly how a Wolverine movie should have been all those years ago, or any of the X-Men/superhero movie.

The great acting by Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman and especially young actress Dafne Keen as X-23 – truly showed the frailty of humanity – when superheroes age and facing natural deaths, or the naivety of children seeking a parent to guide them. The paternal relationship between The old and young is the best symbolism of humanity in all of the X-Men movies combined. Because underneath the superhero powers they are still human with emotions.

One of the highlights of the film is the cinematography. One could not be any further from the original X-Men trilogy, and even the last 2 Wolverine movies – being woefully mediocre to average. Logan corrected everything a fan or a neutral viewer could have wanted. The R-rated violence is filmed in close-up shots, there is no flashy and colourful action sequences like previous movies – but just pure bloodied violence with animalistic rage.

In summary, the movie has exceeded everyone’s expectations and I was thoroughly impressed by young Dafne Keen as an actress. I must also mention that this movie is based on the ‘Old Man Logan’ comic book arc – where it is an alternative universe that Wolverine belonged in.

A must-watch for Marvel fans.
