Behind History of International Men’s Day

International Men’s Day (IMD) is an annual international event celebrated on 19 November to raise awareness about the health of men and boys, promotes gender equality and focuses on the issues they face, highlighting discrimination against men, and promoting male role models. International Men’s Day is celebrated in 80 plus countries on 19 November. International Men’s Day is followed by Universal Children’s Day on 20 November, forming a 48-hour celebration of men and children.

International Men’s Day was first observed in 1999 by on Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, who was lecturer in West Indies. Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh inaugurated to honour his father’s birthday and also to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s football team had united the country with their endeavors to qualify for the World Cup 1989. Teelucksingh promoted International Men’s Day as not just a gendered day but a day where all issues affecting men and boys can be addressed. He has said of IMD and its grass roots activists, “They are striving for gender equality and patiently attempt to remove the negative images and the stigma associated with men in our society”.

The inaugural of the celebration of International Men’s Day in India was organized by the leading Indian Men’s rights organization Save Indian Family on 19 November 2007.[51] The date of 19 November was accepted based on the fact that Australia and the West Indies (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago) were already observing IMD on that date.
